NFPA 70E 2027 Changes: Already in Effect

New rules for energized work, qualified workers, and training records. Herzig helps you update your program and train your team.

The 2027 edition of NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, took effect May 6, 2026, and replaces the 2024 edition. Most of the update is cleanup and clarification. But a handful of changes directly affect how facilities plan energized work, staff jobs, qualify workers, and keep training records.

What's Changing

1

[130.2(A)(2)]

A Second Person for Energized Work

If a work permit is required and calls for shock or arc flash PPE, a second person trained in contact release must be present.

2

[110.4(A)]

Qualified Is Task-Specific

Workers can be qualified for some tasks and equipment but not others. Non-electricians can be qualified for defined tasks.

3

[105.3(A)(2)]

Training Must Be Documented

Employers must provide and document electrical safety training.

4

[110.2(B), 130.7(C)(7)(e)]

Hazards Below 50 Volts

Safe work rules now apply wherever an electrical hazard exists, and thermal hand protection is required for burn hazards.

5

[110.3(L), Chapter 3]

New Audits and Equipment Rules

A new 3-year lockout/tagout program audit, plus new rules for batteries, solar, and dc equipment.

Not changing: PPE categories, approach boundaries, and the 5-year arc flash study review.

Why It Matters

NFPA 70E is the recognized standard for electrical safety in the workplace. OSHA, insurers, and auditors measure safety programs against it. If your program says it follows NFPA 70E without naming an edition, it now points to 2027.

✓

Staffing: single-electrician shifts can no longer perform permitted energized work requiring shock or arc flash PPE alone.

✓

Training records: "we trained them" isn't enough without documentation.

✓

Permits and procedures: section numbers changed, so permit forms and program documents need updating.

✓

Workforce: 70% of electrical fatalities happen to workers outside electrical jobs, the same people who may now serve as the second person.

For multi-site companies, we keep training, programs, and arc flash labeling consistent at every location.

The Bottom Line

The 2027 NFPA 70E isn't a complete overhaul, but the changes it makes are practical and real: a second person for higher-risk energized work, clearer rules on who is qualified, documented training, and new protections for hazards below 50 volts. Update your program, train your people, and keep the records to prove it.
